Mentalis
Musculus mentalis
Also known as: chin muscle, pouting muscle
A small paired muscle of the chin. It elevates and wrinkles the chin skin and protrudes the lower lip (pouting, doubt).
Overview
Mentalis arises from the incisive fossa of the mandible and descends to insert into the skin of the chin. It is the only facial muscle whose fibres run downward to skin from a higher bony origin. Contraction raises the skin of the chin, producing a "peau d'orange" dimpling, and everts and protrudes the lower lip, as in pouting or drinking. Overactivity of mentalis is common when the lips are incompetent.
Anatomy
- Origin
Incisive fossa of the mandible.
- Insertion
Skin of the chin.
- Action
Raises the chin skin and protrudes the lower lip.
- Innervation
Facial nerve (CN VII), marginal mandibular branch.
- Nerve roots
Cranial nerve VII; no spinal roots
- Arterial supply
Inferior labial artery (facial) and mental artery (inferior alveolar).
Function
- Elevates and wrinkles the skin of the chin
- Protrudes and everts the lower lip
